Daniel Arden Nichols
Daniel Arden Nichols, 74, of Grand Forks, ND passed away peacefully surrounded by family on August 12, 2019 at Sanford Hospital in Fargo, ND. He was born in Grand Forks on December 7, 1944 to LeRoy and Odelia (Monson) Nichols. Daniel is survived by his wife, Dona Nichols, who he married on July 30, 1981. He was proud father to daughter Christine Dorsam (Brett) Jasper, Indiana; step-daughter Jacqueline Russell (Erik) Minneapolis, Minnesota. Dan was a loving grandfather to his three grandchildren: Evan Dorsam from Jasper, Indiana; Quinn Dorsam from Evansville, Indiana; Trey Dorsam (Ashley) from Mt. Vernon, Indiana, who are expecting Dan’s first great-grandchild in October; and former wife Sarah Wigand. He is preceded in death by his parents LeRoy and Odelia Nichols and his only sister Joyce (Nichols) Glen of California. Daniel graduated from Grand Forks Central High School in 1963. He attended Humbolt Institute in Minneapolis and St. Paul Vocational Technical College in St. Paul, Minnesota where he studied transportation management. Dan was a veteran of the Vietnam War, where he earned several medals, including the Vietnam Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, Expert Mechanic Badge, and the Vietnam Campaign Medal. He served in the 87th Engineer Battalion (Construction) from November 1963 - September 1966. Daniel worked for the Minnesota Department of Agriculture until his retirement in 2005. Dan enjoyed many hours fishing and camping on Devils Lake with his father and grandchildren. Dan was an excellent marksman in skeet shooting where he earned numerous awards for his exceptional shooting skills. His hobbies also included hunting, taxidermy, woodworking, carving, and telling humorous stories to family and friends. Funeral Services: Will be held at University Lutheran Church, 2122 University Avenue in Grand Forks on Friday, August 16, 2019 at 1:00 p.m.Graveside Burial: at Memorial Park South Cemetery, Grand Forks, ND at 2:30 p.m. with a friends and family gathering at Norman Funeral Home following interment. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society PO Box 22478 Oklahoma City, Ok 73123-1718 or the American Heart Association 300 S. Riverside Plaza Suite 1200 Chicago, IL 60606-6637. Military Honors: Accorded by members of the American Legion Post 157, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3817 and the North Dakota Army National Guard.
